May 30 – On to Munich

At some point on this trip, my luck with trains had to run out. We had a bit of a tough time getting to Munich, but we did make it! We checked out some outdoor sights, poked around in a tea shop, and tried German McDonald’s.

Leaving Zurich

We opted to take the late morning train from Zurich to Munich today so that we could spend a little extra time hanging out in Zurich. It was a beautiful morning and we enjoyed the little bit of window shopping we got to do.

When it came time to board the train, we had a delay. Then another. Then a full cancellation! It was a real bummer. We ended up going down a couple levels in the train station to wait. While we were down there, we discovered that it’s a massive city-block-sized shopping mall! There were grocery stores and clothing outlets, bakeries and florists, stores of every kind. Europe continues to surprise.

After a couple hours of waiting, we finally boarded a direct train to Munich. It was really hot the entire five hour ride. We got to see some pretty views of the Alps in the distance, but it was a long trip. It also ended up being over an hour longer than it should’ve. All good though. We finally made it.

Munich

I was excited to show Valerie and Mom some of the sites in Munich, mostly the cathedrals. Unfortunately, our constant train delays got us here after most of them closed. I was however able to take them to the tea shop that I’ve been thinking about for the last two years! They had hundreds of different teas to smell and purchase. My favorites were the Irish Malt, chocolate chai, and simple chocolate. They’re all so cheap too! It was hard not to load up on several of them.

We had a little bit of time to visit Asamkirche, the most opulent church I’ve ever seen. I know very little about it, but it’s covered in real gold and the public is gated off from entering deep into the church because of it.

Lastly, we were able to walk around the gardens at the Munich Residenz a bit. It was once a palace for the Bavarian royalty but now it’s just a park and several businesses. It’s massive, lush, and houses a couple important museums about Munich’s history.

Big day tomorrow

Today wasn’t near as full as I’d hoped, but we’ve got a big day tomorrow to make up for it. We’re going to Dachau concentration camp in the morning to tour the grounds. I’ve seen it once before but I believe it’s something worth seeing again. Dachau was the first of the concentration camps, so many of the horrible things we all know about the camps were first tested here.

Guess that’s it for today. Til next time!
